Just in time for Valentine's Day comes the first track to leak off the forthcoming NIN record, "My Violent Heart." No real surprises here, except that it's actually not bad. The song is typical Reznor in the quiet-LOUD-quiet mold, with the usual industrial noise fixings. Strangely, this seems to be a political call-to-arms of sorts from the man who uttered these words: "The idea of politics is just so uninteresting to me--I've never paid much attention to it." In the song, Reznor promises, "You cannot stop us all," and "We will not let you win."Track review: NIN "My Violent Heart"

not what i expected. i like it. |

I generally don't like politics with my music. But if there's anything I applaud about anything from Bush's presidency, it's an invigorated Reznor. A new NIN album every two years? Kudos, W. (And the sobriety that brought you and Reznor to raise your respective game.) Cool that Trent's going the tweaked route he used to only tread in his oft-interminable NIN remix projects. |

He said he was inspired by the Bomb Squad (producers of Public Enemy's seminal works), and this track proves that he sure as hell wasn't kidding. Very nice. |

I didn't like it so much at first but it's growing on me. He's getting a bit political I see. Meh. I need drug addicted, horribly lonely and depressed "All I want to eat is glass" down in a hole of despair Reznor, not sure if I will like sober, politically conscious Reznor... |
| Dave |
Yup, not what i expected either. I was afraid it was going to be more of the With Teeth styled sound. This is Glitchy, hip hoppy and Loud and thats how I like it!Cant wait for the album |

Not bad, but not one of his bests! |
| shingtawonteezeun |
I like very much. |

Greg, Why in the hell would you want a drug addicted Trent Reznor. Sure his music has been better, but how good would his music be if he were dead. |

Seems like Trent got is edge back. |

You're too sensitive Sean. Music criticism is music criticism. The blog post wasn't even harsh. |
| S.NOB. |
it sounds like pure... NIN :) |
| Kyrandos |
Wow. Reznor is intent at ruining his music with politics. **** it, Sorry Trent - you lost me buddy.::sighs:: too much Saul Williams and other liberalism inclinded viral spreaders. |

It'll ****in ROCK live...only 12 days to go and counting!!!..*jumps around in excitement* |

So everyone on here who says it's a poor song soley because it's "politically active" is wrong and ignorant. This friends is a 'concept cd' and that concept is the end of the world, so these songs are basically stories i.e. 1984. Yes, it was probably inspired by the times, but what music isn't. |

ah well...i got used to tuning out the message behind the lyrics circa rage against the machine...and they werent my favorite...so if i can do it for them i can certainly do it for nin |

This song reminds me 'sin'a little bit. It seems to me that the sound returns to 'pretty hate' (not at all..): more electronic and less metal guitars. Anyway, its a grat song.I'll taste nin's live tomorrow in barcelona, so I'm quit nervious to meet trent reznor! XDAfter all, the best work of trent by the time is the fragile ;) |

Price: the reason being 'drug addicted' is a "good thing" is that most of Trent Reznor's best musical output came during the periods of time when he was drug addicted, at least that's the consensus. Many fans feel that Trent has lost his edge now that he's clean- and 'drug addicted' doesn't necessarily equate to 'near death.' |

I think it's more of a return to the grittier, edgier NIN that i love so much. And if it's political, then so be it, it doesn't change the sound. |
| Starfkr |
well drug addicted or not, which in all actuallity really doesn't matter (everyone still warships the beatles, stones, zepplin, etc.) he's a creative genius and i always look forward to his next progression... if you really dove into his would you would see brilliance in the intriquicies of his work |

trent, trent, trent...STOP singing. your lyrics are passable at best, and laughably juvenile at worst. you sound like a mix between a macho jock having roid rage and a nerd crying to his mommy that he can't get a date. seriously... grow up and write a decent song. i know you can do this, you've done it... just not in the last 10 years. do you REALLY want to follow up 'with teeth' with an even WORSE lp?a tom waits or johnny cash... you aint.stick to artsy sound sculpture and drop the kiss rock anthems.you look like ****** clown shoes.i miss NIN classic, this diet NIN tastes like ****. |
| » Track Review: NIN “Me, I’m Not |
[...] So I don’t know what Trent Reznor is thinking anymore, but another new NIN track has made its way onto the web. “Me I’m Not” is filled with the same industrial hums and buzzes as the previous two tracks profiled here, but this one lacks any kind of gratifying pay-off. The song simmers throughout and occasionally hints at a much-needed explosion, but it never comes. Maybe I’m alone here, but I’m finding myself less excited to hear the finished product with every new song off Year Zero that I hear. [...] |

People people. Trent almost died at the end of the fragility tour due to a heroin over-dose. i dont know about you but i think the health and well-being of one of my most respected musicians is more important to me that where he takes his music. hes a visionary. i agree with bran. this song isn't necessarily political. trent is returning to a record based template where each song augments the others. we need to hear the entire album for it to makes sense. this is going to be nothing like with teeth. personally i think its a step in the right direction for him. but how would it matter. i love his stuff no matter what he does. his music could all sound like "still" and i would still love it. dont learn to hate and just accept him for what part of his life he is in. enjoy and dont look so deep into it. its emotion. not propaganda. |
| » Track review: NIN “Survivalism” |
[...] So, the first “official” single off the forthcoming Year Zero has been let loose into the Interweb, and it’s a pretty terrible choice. “Survivalism” has some redeeming qualities (most notably the fluctuating buzz in the left channel during the first two verses), but it just sounds a little ham-fisted. I understand how its unrelenting pace makes it better single fodder, but for my money “My Violent Heart” is the far superior track. Judge for yourself. [...] |

You ******* ignorant pricks. With Teeth was atleast as good of an album as his previous ones, if not better. I can see that with the release of these two songs that he's doing just as good as ever. Just because you don't like his lyrics doesn't mean his music sucks. It means that you're just looking for something to complain about. Grow up, you childish little *******. |

everyone in here is wrong and i am right! |

It's quite good, eventhough it's political... It's totally NIN and well.. think we all can agree on, that luckily NIN is one of the few bands that has not become pop... Shout outs to NIN... COLOMBIA HALLE, GERMANY, March! |

yea this song is awesome some pure NIN music its great and the lyrics are awesome |

WOW Overand! And everyone else that thinks Trent could only write good music when he was high. Maybe it's time you all put down the pot or whatever it is you are on, because Trent is sending a message to EVERYONE out there. He doesn't give a shit what you think. He is done trying to impress the world. He is comfortable with who he is and who he has become since getting sober. And his music shows that. If you don't like it, then don't listen to it. Why would you want the same sound from him over and over like all the other crappy music out there today? He is different and not afraid to show it. I think it's awesome and like Trent, don't really give a shit what everyone else thinks. |
| kyle |
Kudos to ShaNIN. I totally agree! |

run the last 8 or 9 seconds of "My Violent Heart" through a spectrogram... |

I am glad Trent is getting political. When you grow up you care about things other than getting high, piercing yourself ugly, and wearing black. Sorry kids. If Trent wants to deride all the great things that George Bush has done since he has been in office..ahem..Good for him! Even though it goes without saying, we have the most f'd up leadership in the free world...Sometimes music can point that out to people who don't read newspapers because they are too busy getting high and thinking about what to pierce next...It was the youth culture spearheaded by a man named John Lennon that helped us get out of the Viet Nam war. I am not saying Trent is trying to be some peace activist, but Hey, If more people understand what is at stake, maybe we can bring our men and women home in something besides caskets. |

It truly is amusing/amazing when one reflects criticism onto another for their evoltion of thought. I once thought, in my adolescence, that I would never become involved in politics. But as the Greeks said, those who did not involve themselves with national matters, were considered "IDIOTS". Our modern usage of the words is quite different, however the coincidence is welcomed. The music is different, the language is new, the Trent has undoubtebly changed. But allow us all to give respect to a man, not musical idol or respected musician, but a man who recently lost friends and a memory-filled-home in New Orleans to begin his new-filled conquest against our current mislead, rogue President G. W. Bush. |

Hey tibbar what song did Johnny Cash cover right before he died? Oh thats right, Hurt. Sometimes people get confused and think that NIN covered it, but its the other way around. Oh, yeah he is a horrible writer and singer. That's why he has 22 bodies of work and soon to be 23. |

i like the sentiment. i agree that people who only have getting tatted up all over and high all day long should be the ones running the country. im sure they wouldnt run it into a shithole in the ground a lot faster than any other possible group of people would.the kind of people who make videos where they simulate stab wounds being raped, and people being kidnapped and castrated, and thats all the video is, is hardcore violence. then those same people who now are all of a sudden against war because it is violent and bad. people who make violent sounding music their whole careers and turn out to be wavy gravy peace loving hippies. go figure.people who make fearmongering statements/albums/movies depicting an america of the future where republicans tap your phones for NO REASON, christians kill everyone else because they are the only violent group of humans on the planet, and the government poisons your water with drugs to keep you complacent/prodcutive, presumably all lead by republicans. republicans are the boogeyman and want to eat your kidneys!THAT ISNT FEARMONGERING? coming from people on the side of the political spectrum who are most apt to point the finger and cry 'FEARMONGER!!!'hypocrisy is so lovely isnt it children? i want people like you running this country.this album is nowhere near as good as the downward spiral or the fragile, but will be hailed as such merely because of its politics. i guess from now on if anyone wants to make art that sells they have to slap some 'clever' and subversive bush/republicans suck and are evil and want to kill you messages in it. |
