The Expendables, the franchise that gives a home to retiring and senile action stars from the past, keeps growing in scope. The first starred explosive luminaries like Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham.
The producers felt that there weren't enough stars in that movie, so the upcoming sequel will feature even more star power, including Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Therefore, speculation is high that the third installment of the series, which has already been green-lit, will cause an action star critical mass to form and potentially devour all of Hollywood. The latest news from IndieWire is that Sylvester Stallone has convinced Nicolas Cage to appear in the movie. Unfortunately, the same source debunks the possibility of Clint Eastwood taking part.
Who else might be included in the eventual cast list? Mel Gibson, Danny Glover and Samuel L. Jackson could all warrant invites. It might even be nice to see a couple of female action luminaries, like Sigourney Weaver or Milla Jovovich, invited to take part. However, The Expendables seems to exist purely as a boys club.
Meanwhile, Steven Segal still waits beside his phone, patiently waiting for it to ring.
