This week, a documentary will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival featuring an original score written by Bad Seeds/Grinderman bandmates Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Called West of Memphis, the work will examine the trial of three men (Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr., dubbed the 'West Memphis Three') who, in 1994, were accused and convicted of murdering three eight-year-old boys. After 18 controversial years in prison, the men were finally freed in August 2011.
The film, directed and written by Amy Berg and co-produced and co-written by Peter Jackson, apparently focuses on supporters of the trio and looks to a victim's stepfather as the true murderer. Cave and Ellis have previously worked together doing the score for the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's The Road. For more information about the case of the West Memphis Three, go here.
