Nearly seven years on from his tragic death and the legacy of Elliott Smith still casts a long shadow over the indie world. Kill Rock Stars will be reissuing Smith’s first and last records on April 6. Roman Candle was Smith’s debut release, put out by the small Portland, Oregon label Cavity Search in 1994. With the exception of minor contributions from Pete Krebs, all instruments on the record were played by Smith himself, resulting in a homespun lo-fi atmosphere. Roman Candle has been remastered by Larry Crane and this reissue marks the first time the record will be available domestically on vinyl.
From A Basement On The Hill was Smith’s posthumously released swan song, production on the album was finished by Smith’s longtime producer Rob Schnapf and former girlfriend and musician Joanna Bolme. The album was originally released by Anti- in 2004. Kill Rock Stars have made available two MP3s from the forthcoming reissues on their website.
