New Order and others pay tribute to Tony Wilson

If you’ve seen Control (or the awesome Joy Division documentary, or the less popular 24 Hour Party People) you know how important Tony Wilson was in launching Manchester as a musical force. He started Factory Records and signed Joy Division, New Order, and Happy Mondays among others, saw The Smiths’ first show, and owned the famed club The Hacienda. Well, some of those of who’ve had careers thanks to the late, great Wilson are paying him tribute through Tony Wilson Experience.

Moderators like New Order members Stephen Morris, Peter Hook, and Gillian Gilbert, Joy Division director Grant Gee, Factory Records artist and co-owner Peter Saville, Control screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh, and Steve Coogan, who played Wilson in 24 Hour Party People, will take part in a 24-hour conversation with young Manchester residents in hope of fostering a new artistic community. The goal of the event is to start a creative arts summer school in Manchester.

It all takes place on June 21-22 in Manchester City Center, and will be commemorated with a bunch of podcasts. [Pitchfork]
