Neil Young has teamed up with super producer Daniel Lanois to record a new album, titled Le Noise. The singer made the announcement about the record via his Facebook page, which hints that he is starting to embrace new technology after being outspoken in his criticism of CDs and MP3s (and often justifiably so) over the years.
Le Noise will be released on CD, vinyl and via iTunes on Sept. 28, and then on Blu-Ray and on an iPhone/iPad app in late November. "The app will be free," Young wrote. "It gives you an interactive album cover. Forgive my use of the word 'album.' I am old school. When you buy the songs/movies from I- tunes they show up in your APP."
Lanois has spoken to Rolling Stone about the release, saying: "We cut a couple of solo acoustic songs, but the rest is very electric. There's no band, but I got in there with my sonics. There's nothing else out there like it." This may disappoint fans hankering after a new Crazy Horse album, but the premise certainly sounds intriguing. It could even be a Freedom for the 2010s.
