New Music: Spoon "The Underdog"

The Kinksian acoustic strut of "The Underdog" (drawn from Spoon's new rock platter Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, out in less than a month) may remind you a lot of "I Summon You" from Gimme Fiction, but this one's a whole new thang for Spoon: it's got an unabashed joy to go with its nasty lyric ("You've got no fear of the underdog/That's why you will not survive/Right?"), a horn section, and is that somebody playing the spoons (get it) in the middle section? Still no bass or electricity in this one, and the percussion is pretty light, so it maintains Spoon's minimalist charms. I've got a good feeling about this new album.
