When they're not busy fighting it out with the Coral for the title of Best Dreamy U.K. Psychedelic Pop Band Whose Name Starts With "C" (well, maybe it was a paisley pillowfight -- hey, that's a pretty good psychedelic band name too), The Clientele have gotten themselves into the habit of taking a busman's holiday between albums and releasing EPs on the Spanish Acuarela label. The latest, That Night, A Forest Grew, is available now on iTunes and eMusic, and is due out on Acuarela on September 9.
The third of the band's Acuarela EPs, it continues the tradition of veering slightly off the remarkably consistent sonic path of the Clientele's album catalog. While past EPs have experimented with droney minimalism or stark piano settings, this one purports to be "danceable," as "beamed in from a dream-discotheque." Upon closer inspection, only one of the four tunes could concievably inspire dancefloor locomotion; the rest are basically mid-tempo pop with the a bit more of an urgent feel than usual. Regardless, it maintains the shockingly high quality level The Clientele has kept up across its entire discography, so the lack of booty-shaking is no reason to stay away.
