New Band Sweet Apple, Featuring J. Mascis, Set To Release Debut Album

    J. Mascis never stops working. Apart from his stint as longtime front man for Dinosaur Jr, he produces solo albums with The Fog, bangs the skins with Witch, and chants for Amma (all while wearing the freshest Adidas gear on the planet). So, in the gap between projects, the dude decides to team up with some friends and create yet another band — Sweet Apple. Of course.

As reported last month, Sweet Apple emerged out of personal tragedy. Cobra Verde singer John Petkovic, devastated after the death of his mother, decided to take a drive with no destination in mind. Chain smoking and depressed, he received a call from friend Dave Sweetapple (who plays bass in Witch); the two met up in Vermont, called mutual friend J. Mascis, and decided to form a band that night. Easy as that. Petkovic returned home, teamed up with former CV band mate Tim Parnin, and knocked out an album’s worth of jams.

Recorded in Cleveland and Massachusetts, and mixed by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, The Hold Steady) and Don Depew (Guided By Voices, Cobra Verde), Love & Desperation comes out April 20th on Tee Pee Records. A U.S. tour is promised in the future.

You can listen to the first single, “Do You Remember,” on their Myspace page.
