Prefix exclusive: Neva Dinova, "Will the Ladies Send You Flowers"
If you order Neva Dinova's You May Already be Dreaming directly from Saddle Creek, the label includes a fake prescription bottle filled with candy pills in your slow, sad care package from Omaha. It's that kind of music -- careful to consider each tear streaking through the mud and wine caked in a beard, and falling unceremoniously into the wash basin below -- but it's rewarding when all you need is a shoulder to drink near. "Will the Ladies Send You Flowers?" doesn't get less morose after its opening line; Jake Bellows, Neva Dinova's main man, loves to sigh his way through his country-inflected meditations on morality. But in the song's accompanying video, beautifully shot in close-up of what seems to be a paper marionette universe, the skeletons and dancing bones lend "Will the Ladies" some much-needed, otherworldly warmth. If you don't have anything to live for, you might as well live for the next glass of whiskey. Or maybe a prescription for candy pills.
