M.I.A. had her “finger malfunction” moment at the Super Bowl half-time show last night, causing NBC and the NFL to issue quick apologies. Video of the singer performing “Gimme All Your Luvin’” with Madonna and Nicki Minaj quickly circulated online—you can see it in the clips below.
The statement about the incident by NBC was issued to the Hollywood Reporter, and reads as follows:
"The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show. Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers.
The NFL's statement looks like this:
"There was a failure in NBC's delay system. The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans."
Will this cause as big a controversy as Janet Jackson’s famous nipple slip in 2004? That remains to be seen, but it seems likely that M.I.A. is enjoying the headlines she's generating this morning. And who wouldn't want to be a fly on the wall during the (presumably) frosty exchanges that are taking place between execs at NBC and the NFL right now?
