Nas Covers Slick Rick in Levi's 'Pioneer Sessions'

Nas is one of several artists taking part in the "Levi's Pioneer Sessions: The Revival Recordings" series, where current artists like the Queensbridge-bred MC along with The Dirty Projectors and She & Him remake old tunes as part of an effort by the jeans brand to to "champion musical artists who embody the pioneering spirit of...Levi's."

While Nas offers a redo of "Hey Young World" by eye-patched hip-hop icon Slick Rick, who the former proclaims is his "personal favorite MC," She & Him tackle Rick Nelson's "Fools Rush In." From today until July 1, Levi's will release two covers each week, with Nas's remake available now for free download on the "Pioneer Sessions" homepage and The Swell Season's take on Candi Staton's "Young Hearts Run Free" coming up Thursday, May 27. Below is a current list of other covers that will roll out and more artists will be announced in the weeks to come.

The Dirty Projectors: "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine" (Bob Dylan)

Colbie Caillat: "Maria" (Blondie)

The Shins: "Goodbye Girl" (Squeeze)

Pretty cool idea. Weird mix of artists so far, but I'm definitely interested in the Dirty Projectors' cover of Dylan's "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine," a beautiful song.

Aside from this being an obviously great choice by Nasir, it creates an interesting string of connections. He likely took the "the world is yours" line from the Slick Rick song to help create one of Illmatic's best tracks, "The World Is Yours." Then, I thought about how Fashawn is working on a Nas tribute mixtape dubbed Ode to Illmatic. There is also the fact that Fash has a track on his Boy Meets World debut called "Hey Young World."

Kinda interesting...to me, at least, haha.
