MySpace Creates MySpace Music Charts

MySpace Creates MySpace Music Charts

MySpace Music has just implemented a new Charts portion of their website. The new section is an expanded version of their Top Artists button, which ranked unsigned artists, artists on indie labels and artists on major labels according to their popularity on MySpace.

The new system, MySpace Music Charts, uses the same data to rank artists in the same categories, as well as overall, and also will include information on the most popular songs, albums and videos across MySpace. In addition, there is a "Movers" category that charts the biggest jumps in popularity across MySpace. The chart also allows you to filter by region or genre, though how Seether and Shinedown qualify as "Indie" is a mystery.

The new feature theoretically allows users and companies to look at tangible data about artists, in addition to providing people with a way to preview new artists. While it may be a small step, it seems more likely that MySpace would be able to drive more traffic to their site by doing things like this, rather than having customers pay for streaming music.
