Muxtape temporarily shut down by the RIAA

Free mix tape website Muxtape has been temporarily shut down due to pressure from the Recording Industry Association of America. Specifics were not released by either party, save for a short note on Muxtape’s front page saying that it “will be unavailable for a brief period while we sort out a problem with the RIAA.”  The problem in question is most likely the considerable amount of music being hosted and streamed on the website, which means that Muxtape could have to pay the same licensing fees as other streaming radio services. Until further details emerge however, users are in the dark and searching for their real-life tape players.[CNET]

This, I think, is a marketing stunt to stir up some controversy. Muxtape claim not complaints have been made against them. They are just allowing the presumptions to fuel a bit of gossip and then *bam* they'll relaunch with some new "give us your money" type affair. Watch this space...

I don't know about that Jeej. I don't think it's a wise strategy because as it currently stands this will raise their profile with the RIAA and if they're not really in trouble with them now they might soon be.
