Anyone enjoying free streaming music should be prepared for a rocky few years ahead. Spotify still hasn’t launched in North America, and appears to be at loggerheads with record labels, who aren’t quite as willing to let music be streamed for free as their European counterparts.
Warner Music recently announced it won’t be allowing its artists’ work to be used by streaming sites, and now Muse, who are signed to Warner, have come out against their label. "It's like taking your song off the radio isn't it?" said bassist Chris Wolstenhome. "You're instantly taking your song away from a group of potential listeners."
Wolstenhome indicates it's the labels and not the artists dictating these terms: “I do sometimes feel that this whole restriction that's been set on how your music can get out there these days doesn't ever really come from the bands,” he continued. “It's coming from the corporations behind everything.” While this one is set to run and run, most music fans in North America will continue to cast an envious eye toward Spotify users in Europe.
