It’s been a long time since MTV focused on music content, but they still have enough business savvy to know that it would be a dumb move to deliberately antagonize someone of Eminem’s stature. At least the hip-hop star knows how to convincingly stage mock outrage—his exit from the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday has been confirmed as a well rehearsed act.
MTV writer Scott Aukerman confirmed that the pair staged the stunt for the show, in which Sacha Baron Cohen, working under his Bruno guise, landed ass-first on Eminem’s face. Writing on his blog, Aukerman says: “Yes, the Bruno/Eminem incident was staged. That's all anyone wants to talk about, so let's get it out of the way. They rehearsed it at dress and yes, it went as far as it did on the live show then.”
Eminem’s Relapse has just been released and the Bruno feature film is set to hit movie screens later this year, so this prank made perfect commercial sense. Aukerman has subsequently deleted the post from his blog, so someone (MTV? Cohen? Eminem?) is clearly still keen to present this stunt as the real deal.
