It was twenty-seven years ago, in 1985, when MTV first dropped their ArtBreak video series. The idea was to feature short, arty clips by up-and-coming visual artists and then slot those clips between shows. It was a totally in-character move for the network that was trying to bring relevancy to the art of young people.
Come April 2, the network will be brinigng back ArtBreaks for a new generation, which in the current MTV environment seems out-of-character, and maybe even (dare I say?) edgy, given its primary audience of Jersey Shore enthusiasts and Real World/Road Rules Challenge experts. There's a Tumblr set up in support of the series, where you can check out some of the old clips and soon-to-be featured artists, and MTV will be cataloging the clips on their website. [Spin]
