Remember that part in Aphex Twin’s “Windowlicker” video just before Richard D. James shows up in his car? The part where two guys are trying to pick up the suddenly Aphex-ified women? MTV Europe just paid a hefty price for the expletive-riddled dialogue that introduces the Chris Cunningham directed clip.
Turns out the network aired the video before 9pm and got into big trouble with Ofcom, who regulate viewing practices in the U.K. Ofcom has fined MTV $484,500 for “widespread and persistent” breaches of the strict codes that networks are supposed to adhere to. The Aphex Twin video, which is surely one of the funniest, most creative, and totally bizarre clips of all time, has been sited as one of the prime reasons for the fine.
Let's hope that Prefix doesn’t get a similar fine for showing the clip. [The Daily Swarm]

the fine is (almost) worth it - "windowlicker" is the greatest video of all time - if only we got more of the same from richard d. james and chris cunningham in the years since ... (i guess "rubber johnny" sort of counts though ...)
