Wow.
Stretch Armstrong just revealed this little gem on his Konstant Kontakt blog. This 22-minute blast is an epic freestyle from Big Daddy Kane's birthday back in the early 1990s (Armstrong seems fuzzy on the exact year) that features a virtual Who's Who of NYC hip-hop from back in the day, including Special Ed, Biz Markie, Smooth B, Masta Ace, Just-Ice, Lakim Shabazz, Positive K, Scoob Lover and Scrap Lover -- quite nice of BDK to let his backup dancers grab the mike every now and then -- Markey Fresh, Frukwan, the Big Daddy himself and a young Jay-Z.
It was good enough for a couple of emcees to put on wax later. Keen ears may recognize this recording of Masta Ace's verse as the bit tacked onto the end of "Rollin' Wit Umdada" off of his 1993 record SlaughtaHouse. Pos K also ended up recycling his freestyle as "How the F*** Would You Know?" on 1992's The Skills Dat Pay Da Bills. (Nerdy blogger pushes up glasses here.)
As Armstrong points out, it ends on an interesting note as Big Ill the Mack spits a ferocious verse that even takes jabs at the birthday boy's transition from "Raw" to "Smooth Operator" -- and perhaps the existence of his backup dancers -- punctuated by the highly audible sound of a dropped mike at the end.
Something tells us this isn't the sort of thing you'd find at a G-Unit birthday party. Just sayin'.
