John Darnielle announced via his his Twitter that he work had been finished on the new Mountain Goats LP, and confirmed that former Morbid Angel guitarist and current Hate Eternal frontman Erik Rutan had collaborated on four tracks. The death metal legend produced the tracks in his own Florida studio, letting Darnielle play through his Engl Powerball, a highlight of the sessions for The Mountain Goats frontman.
Darnielle has made no secret of his love of death metal over the years, as anybody who's heard "The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton" knows, but this is the first time he's actually had a chance to collaborate with a prominent metal figure. Other collaborators on the new album include Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster, bassist Peter Hughes and engineer Brandon Eggleston. [Pitchfork]
