Moses Sumney Reveals Video for Haunting New Song “Doomed” — Listen / Watch

The Los Angeles crooner also announced tour dates across North America and Europe

Los Angeles singer-songwriter Moses Sumney has unveiled the video for his latest musical offering, “Doomed.” The new song’s video was directed by Allie Avital — who also directed his “Worth It” video.

Sumney appears submerged in water, floating in a dimly-lit tank. While the water has flashes of light, he is in a completely dark room. As he sulks in the water, he sings slowly and passionately. The camera angles move to show his whole body with intimate detail. As the song progresses, it’s revealed that Sumney is not alone in the pitch-black room. In a separate water tank, there is a woman with her hands pressed against the glass, reaching out for him. The two long for one another, both immersed in water. It’s a romantic tale of yearning, depicted tragically, as they both are deprived of air and each other’s embrace.

Musically, “Doomed” is a hauntingly beautiful piece of slow-burning electronic music. The song features nothing more than a reverb-blurred synth, some minor sound effects, and Sumney’s stunning falsetto vocals. His voice is given just a small amount of reverb, leaving the rest of his singing raw and vulnerable. Soulful and pained, he weaves in and out of brash and delicate vibrato. The track builds to an emotional climax, with the synth frequencies expanding — both low & high — and spacey background vocals filling up the blank spaces.

Sumney recently signed a record deal with Jagjaguwar and has made it evident that “Doomed” will be a part of something new to come from the rising artist soon. He has been releasing small bits of music — such as 2016’s Lamentations — and opening for national acts such as James Blake and Sufjan Stevens. He will now embark on an expansive tour across North America and Europe. Starting later this month, the tour will kick off in New Orleans on June 30th.
