Following a leaked document describing military instructions for force feeding hunger striking detainees of Guantanamo Bay , Yasiin Bey (better known as Mos Def) undergoes the controversial procedure in a disturbing video released by human rights organization Reprieve. Directed by BAFTA winner Asif Kapadia, the four minute clip shows the prison garb clad actor-rapper handcuffed to a chair, before feeding tubes are inserted into his nostrils, a sensation he later describes as “burning” and “unbearable.”
Not for the faint hearted, Bey’s experience lasts a mere fraction of the two hour ordeal 45 inmates have been enduring since the hunger strikes began at the prison in February. The video’s release comes at a difficult for the Obama administration, as lawyers for inmates are filing petitions that the procedure be stopped during the holy month of Ramadan. Though the President promised the camp would be closed over four years ago, and
has recently described it as a “moral problem” for the country, the government continues to defend its force feeding policy as "humane, high-quality medical care to preserve life and health". The video released today, may leave some questioning this position.
Again, this is not for the faint hearted. To view the video see below or check out The Guardian's webpage.
