Another day, another offensive, stupid thing Morrissey is saying about a fast food restaurant: “We all live in a murderous world, as the events in Norway have shown, with 97 dead," Morrissey said. "Though that is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried S*** every day.”
That's right, Morrissey, who will never let anyone forget that he made the bourgeoise choice to be a vegetarian, is saying that Kentucky Fried Chicken and McDonald's, because they kill chickens that people want to eat, are worse than a human killing 97 other humans in cold blood.
I mean, I get that we probably treat animals unfairly, and killing them is mean, in some ways. But people want to eat, and chickens are generally pretty delicious. But killing other people will always be worse than killing a chicken. Anyone who suggests otherwise made a wrong turn somewhere. [DS]
Maybe this is not Morrissey's point, but the *human* death toll that the fast food places are responsible for (cardiac disease, diabetes, E. Coli, etc....) is worse, partly because it is actually *subsidized* via our tax dollars, and partly because it's legalized harm and death to human beings, many of whom are poor and lower middle class, and simply cannot afford more 'bourgeoise' healthy plant-based choices even if these were available to them...

He is insensitive but correct. The outrage at his statement comes from 2 places:
1) He gives animals much greater importance and rights than non-vegans, so of course his reaction to animal issues seems out of proportion to most people who would never think of cruelty to a pig as being similar to cruelty to a child.
2) He's saying that in terms of cruelty and suffering, millions and millions of animals undergo lifelong intense suffering in factory farms followed by murder for food. Given how strongly he feels about animal rights, of course the suffering of millions of animals is a much greater evil than even the cold-blood gunning down of 70 innocent people.
I think he said it because he chose to attempt to shock people into thinking about how they choose to treat animals. While I would not use such a technique to try to get people to examine their thinking about animals, I empathize with his aggressive, heartfelt efforts to decrease cruelty to animals. When you realize just how much suffering these sentient, conscious, emotional beings undergo in factory farms, it's very difficult to bear. Going vegan isn't enough -- other people need to be woken up to this great evil.
Morrissey is a brave man for choosing such a loaded issue to point out animal abuse, but he was entirely correct in his statements. Nevertheless, career-wise, I can't imagine this will benefit him.

Don't know why anyone's surprised. This guy's always acted a moron, don't know why he'd act any differently in his dotage.
