Indie-rock stars often face tough audiences as they turn up at the latest makeshift hipster loft venues across the country. And who knows whether those kids actually like your band, or if they’re just into you because some cool blog has decreed that you’re flavor of the month. Being an indie-rocker can be a painful and confusing experience.
But there’s always one loyal supporter, one person you can depend on to champion you no matter how far you head in that new Bavarian-folk-meets-speed-metal direction. Yes, it's your mom, who will always support you no matter what. So, with this in mind, popular subscription download site eMusic has spoken to a group of moms whose offspring all play in indie-rock bands.
The results are heartwarming and amusing in equal measure. Michele Schulz, mother of Matt Schulz from Holy Fuck, reveals that she refers to her son’s band as “HF.” Nicole Townsend, mother of Crystal Stilts guitarist JB Townsend, makes the familiar motherly complaint that she “still can’t understand” what vocalist Brad Hargett is singing.
Other touching additions include Justin Vernon from Bon Iver’s mother saying “I cry every time I hear it” in reference to her son’s song “Re: Stacks.” Meanwhile, Adam Green’s mom claims she turned him on to the tropicalia flavor of “Sixes & Sevens,” and Jane Pearson, mother of Mary Pearson from High Places, talks about the “loss and pride” she feels when hearing her daughter’s “Freaked Flight.” It’s a fun read, with a big “aw!” factor, and further additions to the piece include Laura Cantrell, Les Savy Fav, Beirut and Bishop Allen. Pretty cool idea by eMusic. Love this bit:
"Michele Schulz, mother of Matt Schulz from Holy F**k, reveals that she refers to her son’s band as “HF.” Nicole Townsend, mother of Crystal Stilts guitarist JB Townsend, makes the familiar motherly complaint that she “still can’t understand” what vocalist Brad Hargett is singing."
