It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday, so the folks at popular download site eMusic have revived their feature from last year, where they ask the moms of indie rockers to talk about the best songs produced by their offspring. Forget critics, moms dispense with flowery language and pointless comparisons and get straight to the point, as this article proves.
Among the contributors are Narelle Scott, mother of Cut Copy’s Mitchell Scott, who knows exactly how to reduce her son’s cool quotient in the way only a mom can. “This is the one that makes me dance and snap my fingers, sing at the top of my voice and join in the "woo-ooo-oo"s like the best back-up singer ever,” she says of In Ghost Colours.
Shari Devendorf, mother of Scott and Bryan Devendorf from the National, swells with pride as she talks about songs from Boxer. “I love the passion that each member of the band has about their music,” she says. Meanwhile, Teresa Perrin, mother of Spencer Krug from Sunset Rubdown, gets wistful when she says that “Random Spirit Lover” reminds her of “hearing Spencer play when he was a teenager.” That gets a huge “aw!” over here at Prefix Towers.
Saving the best for last, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart up the ante considerably by getting Kip Berman’s grandmother involved, who is so sweet that it’s hard not to wish she was your grandmother. “Our love for him had no boundaries,” says Kaye Berman. “My husband always referred to him as ‘The Orchard of My Eye.’” Next year, eMusic should canvas death metal moms for their opinions.
