Are you currently working on a student film or some other low budget, non-mainstream movie that's desperately in need of just the right type of vanilla, electro background music? Well, Moby just might be your man. The Bald One has launched a site entitled "Moby Gratis" where aspiring filmmakers can set up accounts, sample music that Moby is willing to give away, and download anything that catches their ears. Follow on after the jump for the details... From Mr. Moby himself (with uppercase letters added, because, well, writing everything in lowercase is juvenile): "The music is free as long as it's being used in a non-commercial or non-profit film, video, or short. If you want to use it in a commercial film or short than you can apply for an easy license, with any money that's generated being given to the Humane Society." You can always count on two things from Mobes. One is his finding new ways to saturate the market with his tunes. The other, and much more positive constant, is his concern for our furry friends.
I'm not exactly a treehugger or whatever, but shouldn't we be commending him for such a move? I mean, like him or not, he's a household name. He's offering to let filmakers that are just starting out to (legally) use the music of a big name act in their film, and instead of ripping them off, he's giving the money to charity. Can't we at least balance the scoffs with some props?

Ummm...I think this move is just too easy to make "Give it away? Yeah, because no one would buy that crap!" cracks on.

ShirleyI disagree with some of your details, but your main point got me thinking. It actually reminds me of some movies I downloaded recently.

I think it's a very smart move for Moby to do this and I'm personally very grateful to him for helping us folks who do independent work. It's not like he's gonna run outta songs by going gratis with 70 to 100 songs ... he's one of the most talented songwriters in the biz. Just say ... THANK YOU, SWEET THANG ... and let 'er be!
