In a stunningly self-destructive backstage interview, Miley Cyrus claimed she does not listen to pop music and has never heard anything by Jay-Z. Considering she makes her money from sugary, Top 40 hits and that her single “Party in the U.S.A.” is about how a Jay-Z track is her personal fave, this statement is a little unbelievable. Cyrus’ explanation is even less solid:
Honestly, I picked that song because I needed something to go with my clothing line [with Max Azria]. I didn't write it [and] I didn't expect it to be popular, originally…[“Party in the U.S.A.”] is not even my style of music.
So what exactly is Cyrus’ style? The reporter asked if she might consider covering her father Billy Ray’s country hit “Achy Breaky Heart,” but the sixteen-year-old singer poo-pooed that suggestion, too. Maybe she’s still hung up on her old favorite bandRadiohead. Miley covering “Treefingers” FTW! [MTV]
I don't believe this although Jay-Z hasn't had as big songs as most of the other huge rappers. His biggest song is maybe Big Pimpin?

r u kiddin me? u would think of big pimpin over dirt off your shoulder or even encore? ever heard of empire state of mind? that was #1. run this town was #3 and D.O.A. was #5. don't comment if u don't know what ur talkin about.
damn, daba got skooled. everyone knows that D.O.A. and Run This Town are way bigger songs than Big Pimpin,' the wave patterns of which i think are carved onto the inside of my skull.
haha, wow way to jump down his throat. i would definitely say big pimpin' is his most well known track coming from someone who doesn't give two sh*** about jay-z. it's the first one that would have came to my mind. i don't even know what run this town is and i've never heard empire state of mind... don't think i know what encore is either. think about other people's perspectives or don't comment.
She said JayZ saved her life. Does that mean she never heard of a Radiohead song too? coz, she also said Radiohead was the reason she was into music. What did Jay Z do to you?
These are also huge Jay-Z songs that haven't been mentioned yet. Like others mentioned upthread, each of these songs were heard everywhere when they dropped.
"Can I Get a...", "Can't Knock the Hustle", "N**** What, N**** Who", "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)", and, more recently, "Roc Boys" and "Brooklyn Go Hard" featuring Santigold. This is just counting the big radio hits.
Never heard a Jay-Z song? Is she retarded? Anyway in 2010 I'll be fapping to her Playboy picks.

In this context, it seems rather inconceivable that she never heard a Jay-Z song, considering she referenced him in her song (although she admitted to not writing it), but believe it or not, it's not hard to completely avoid Jay-z or any other artist in the mainstream if you don't listen to the stations that play Jay-Z and you're not into hip-hop or hang out with anyone who is. On another note, this interview pretty much reveals what we've suspected all along: Miley is a product of the Disney machine, nothing more. All she is is a cash cow, and will remain relevant only until her bosses find an even bigger cash cow to milk or her fanbase grows up and loses interest in her crappy music/TV show.

I can believe that, in making a fairly pleasant pop song, written by other people, she didn't hear a song by Jay Z.

Like T said, It's quite possible not to hear a Jay Z song. Difficult but possible. Even more difficult if music is your profession. Don't buy it at all that Miley "Gums" Cyrus never heard a Jigga track. He's been making music before she can walk. The best possible story she has is that she could not pick his voice out if hearing one of his songs. She's lying, she dusts off her shoulders every once in all. Every time she talks only proves her maturity and age.
