Microsoft says phones need their own DRM
DRM is dead? Dying? Really? Despite that none of these schemes actually works to secure content (the latest casualty being Blu-Ray and HD-DVD's copy protection), Microsoft has announced PlayReady, DRM designed to work with cell phones. Verizon and Cing--er, AT&T, are listed as American carriers ready to implement the new scheme. PlayReady will include support for Windows Media Audio and Video, so presumably those who think their iPod video's screen is overly spacious can watch Shrek 2 on their new model Razr or Krzr or whatever goofy four-letter name Motorola comes up with next.
Given that Microsoft marooned its own PlaysForSure partners to pursue a new plan with the Zune and that whispers of a Zune phone are on the horizon, this can't possibly go well.
