Members of Australian instrumental rock outfit the Dirty Three are keeping busy with side projects. A while ago we learned that drummer Jim White has made an album with crooner Nina Nastasia, which is slated for an August release. And now comes word that guitarist Mick Turner will release a new solo album, Blue Trees, July 17 on the venerable Drag City label. You may also know Turner from the axe work he provided on Cat Power's landmark Moon Pix album or other musical ventures he's undertaken with the likes of Will Oldham, Ken Vandermark, and Edith Frost. Turner is also an accomplished visual artist, so the artwork for Blue Trees can be expected to come from Turner as well.
I've worked with Mick Turner? When? I've met him, and I've played shows with Dirty Three, played and recorded with Jim White a few times, and we're all labelmates and stuff. But I can't recall ever playing or recording with Mick other than being on the same bill w/ Dirty Three. He's a great player and a nice guy though. He (indirectly) turned me on to the game Bop-It...!!
