A section of Michael Jackson’s fans may have cast disapproving glances in the direction of his movie This Is It, but that didn’t stop it from hitting the box office number 1 slot over the weekend. The movie is compiled from clips of rehearsal footage shot during the run-up to Jackson’s ill-fated set of shows in London.
After some grand opening night celebrations across the globe, the film has raked in $21 million in the U.S. since its release on Wednesday (Oct. 28) last week. The global total box office for This Is It is currently standing around the $101 million mark, demonstrating how people are still clamoring for anything Jackson related.
The proposed two-week run of the movie undoubtedly played a part in getting people out to movie screens, although Sony Pictures has now revealed that This Is It will now play for an entire month. Could the movie pick up an Oscar for its deceased star? It seems unlikely, although Sony apparently intends to submit it for a Best Picture award.
