One of Michael Jackson's greatest songs took about the same time to write as a birthday card. Struck by inspiration during a car ride with two of his brothers, Jackson took out a pen and pad and wrote the complete lyrics in three minutes. According to his former plastic surgeon, Dr. Steven Hoefflin, "He said the lyrics tumbled out of his head in one continuous, rapid stream."
Think about it: the song that has become the Holy Grail of pop music, the sound that so much music since has aspired to, was written in less time than it took me write this post. What have you done in the last three minutes?
