Here’s a little math puzzle for you on a Friday morning: If Michael Jackson is playing 50 shows at the 02 Arena in London, all of which have just sold out, how many people will see him play? According to Wikipedia, the O2 Arena can hold up to 20,000 people per event. A quick look at the Prefix calculator says that 20,000 x 50 = 1,000,000. It’s not yet known whether the arena will be running close to that capacity for the shows, but it’s a safe bet to say that close to one million people will get to see Jackson play.
The shows run through July to September this year and conclude in January and February 2010. The unprecedented demand for tickets confirms that Jackson is still very much the “King of Pop,” and his recent financial problems are surely behind him now. With a world tour expected to follow the London residency, it seems that Jackson is a commodity that people need in their lives despite the recession.
British tabloid the Daily Mirror claims to have acquired the set list for Jackson’s forthcoming shows, and while this is by no means confirmed, let’s hope the omission of the execrable “Earth Song” is indeed correct.
