It's a story that is going semi-viral today, but something that I thought was known already: Michael Jackson DID NOT sing during that one episode of The Simpsons when Homer does some time in a mental hospital a la One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Apparently Jackson DID voice the character, but his record label wouldn't let him sing, so Jackson hand-picked an impersonator named Kipp Lennon.
Of course, all of this is via Yeardley Smith, the voice of Lisa, so maybe she doesn't know everything? But this did come from the respected media outlet TMZ, so there's that. But unless this comes from Matt Groening himself, I'm not sure what to believe. [TMZ]
I figured wasn't him from the first time it aired. I thought this was common knowledge.
It is common knowledge. They said it on the DVD commentary of the episode. Same story. Record label wouldnt let him because of his contract. Kipp Lennon is credited in the episode.

Michael Jackson’s legacy as an icon of music history is so clouded by our media-biased views of his life that we’ll never know the man behind all his rich music. He is the ultimate example of what happens when celebrity worship goes too far… having the press and court of opinion try him the last half of his life. I created a before and after portrait of The King of Pop on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/06/in-memoriam-king-of-pop.html

Michael did not sing, that is "correct" as per his label is concerend, Kipp Lennon did do the song "Lisa it's your birthday" but, Michael recorded this song also....He recorded it to apparently show Kipp how he wanted it done....Basically, there are two version's, both of which are on one track so, only Matt Groening know's which one was actually used....If it was Michael's voice that means that the version Michael recorded was "trickery" to convince his label it was only for demonstration purposes, Kipp matched it as closely as he could so the label couldn't tell the difference and then it was up to Matt which one to use....Or something like that....

It was always obvious that it wasn't Michael singing. The voice was too overly exaggerated to be him.

This is hilarious. I've known this for years!! I'm not quite sure how it is 'breaking news.' lol
