MIA denies link to Tamil Tigers

Recently retired hip-hop it girl MIA has denied that she has any links to the Tamil Tigers, a militant group currently at war with the Sri Lankan government. MIA issued the denial after accusations made by fellow Sri Lankan rapper DeLon. Though her father is a political activist and the founder of a group with purported ties to the revolutionary group, MIA offered this rebuttal:

I don't support terrorism and never have. As a Sri Lankan that fled war and bombings, my music is the voice of the civilian refugee. Frankly, I am not trying to start dialogue with someone who is really just seeking self-promotion."

MIA’s “Paper Planes” is currently unavoidable in commercials for Pineapple Express, but she has been mostly silent since declaring her retirement at Bonnaroo earlier this year. [NME]

She retired? Damn, I think that's a new record for hip-hop.

That's what happens when you wake up one morning and realize that you are one of the most overrated, talentless "artists" on the face of the planet.

M.i.a was a great artist. She may have supporeted the ideas of the Tamil Tigers but I think she is telling the truth when she says that she never supported the violence in that group. It is hard to say which side is more to blame in Sri lanka, and I don't think she supports violence on either side. Whether the messages were clear or not, her music had a definate message and a huge impact on western society and the way alot of people look at Sri lanka. There is somthing to be said about someone with that kind of influence, whether you liked her or not.
