It hasn’t been a good year for organizers of the bi-coastal HARD Festival. First, the Los Angeles incarnation of HARD got canceled, although the exact reasoning for that remains a mystery. Then, this past Saturday (July 24), M.I.A. had to cut her headline set short at the New York version of the event due to a threat of lightning.
HARD festivalgoers still got to see some impressive acts, including Sleigh Bells, Rye Rye and Die Antwoord, but M.I.A. had her set reportedly blighted by sound problems, and the New York Times claims people were leaving the festival long before she closed with an a capella version of “Born Free.”
Naturally, M.I.A. took to Twitter to vent about the problems: “Money doesnt buy u shit! i thought more money means better sound guys in america/\/\/\! i was wrong, the higher u go , they turn u lower!” she said, of the sound problems. M.I.A. is now promising a free New York City show for anyone who attended, although those leaving early may feel this offers little in the way of compensation. Her latest tweet reads:
“Fuck it! im gonna do a free show in nyc when i get back, tho i dont have powers over rain! if u still have the hard ticket u free! Xxxo”
