Truffle fries chompin’ artist, M.I.A., has signed a new management deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. The controversial renaissance woman (she has done everything from painting to directing in little over a decade) joins a roster that includes the likes of Wale, Shakira, Santigold , Meek Mill and Rihanna. The latter , who was seen Sunday backstage at Jay-Z and Kayne West’s Watch the Throne show in London with M.I.A. , graciously tweeted “welcome home” to her now management label mate.
The move comes at a pivotal time for the “Paper Planes” singer. Her fourth album Matangi is due to drop this fall on Interscope Records, following a remix of her last single “Bad Girls” featuring Missy Elliott, Azealia Banks and Rye Rye. Her last album Maya received decidedly mixed reviews from critics and didn’t hit the commercial heights of its predecessor Kala. M.I.A.'s appearance at this year’s Super Bowl was noted more for the rapper’s tired prime time middle finger than the performance itself, and let's not even mention that New York Times interview. The roster of successful acts she is joining on Roc Nation suggests a desire to get back to chart success, and avoid the naïve attempts at controversy that have marred a career that seemed potentially globe conquering just a few years ago.
