When high profile hip hop artists like Eminem and 50 Cent want to tell the story of their hard-knock upbringings, they land movie deals. Underground stars? Well, they have to settle for comic books
All joking aside, Vertigo/DC Comics have announced that they will be releasing a graphic novel written by MF Grimm sometime in 2007. Sentences: The Life of MF Grimm will chronicle the rappers life from his stint as a child actor on Sesame Street, through the tragic attempt on his life that left him paralyzed, to his eventual triumph over this obstacle and career resurgence under the MF Grimm moniker. Newcomer Ronald Wimberly will illustrate the project.
Casey Seijas, acquiring editor for Vertigo made the following comments regarding the release:
The script to Sentences reads exactly like the lyrics to one of MF Grimms raps, raw and brutally honest. He debunks the stereotypes associated with hip-hop and shows that beneath the glamorous veneer of money and fame lies real consequences and heartbreak.
