McCartney looking to release lost Beatles track

Paul McCartney has stated that he'd like to share an unusual, unheard track from the Beatles' archives with the rest of the world. "Carnival of Light" just might shatter the preconceptions of those who pigeonhole McCartney into the role of pop creampuff to John Lennon's avant-garde adventurer. The 1967 track is an experimental electronic piece that preceded Lennon's "Revolution No. 9" and was only heard in public once, when the recording was played at a London festival of electronic music. McCartney's interests were always more wide-ranging than people suppose; it was he who turned Lennon on to Sun Ra's '60s avant-garde jazz recordings on the maverick ESP label, for instance, and Macca says "Carnival of Light" was influenced by his interest in the work of forward-looking composers like John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. The track was voted down for inclusion on the Beatles' Anthology series, but if McCartney can get the ok from Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison, and Yoko Ono, we may all soon get to visit the "Carnival of Light."
