Martin Scorsese Discusses His Film About George Harrison

Martin Scorsese has been talking to Billboard about his documentary based on the life of former Beatle George Harrison. The upsurge of recent interest in the Fab Four looks set to continue for a while yet, with this movie and Liam Gallagher’s proposed film both keeping the band firmly in the spotlight.

“His music is very important to me so I was interested in the journey that he took as an artist,” said Scorsese. “The film is an exploration. We don’t know. We’re just feeling our way through.” The movie was shot over a three year period with help from Harrison’s widow, Olivia, and will be titled Living in the Material World: George Harrison.

Much of the material used in the film is thought to be unseen by the general public, and digging through the archives clearly took its toll on Olivia. “This is a deeply personal journey for me, it’s been excruciating,” she said. “I’ve been archiving for five years — 35 years, really.” Considering Scorsese’s largely excellent past form in the rock doc world, with his work on Bob Dylan and the Band, Living in the Material World should be worth the agony.
