Marlboro Announces MXBeat Concert Series featuring Vampire Weekend, N.E.R.D., Girl Talk

It seems that the economic crisis is so devastating that even the tobacco industry is having to leave the country to make money. In Marlboro’s case, they’ve convinced Mexico and dozens of bands popular among the 16-25 age group to allow the company sponsor a four concert series in Mexico. As you can assume, MXBeat is already knee-deep in controversy. Apparently, the MXBeat website is not accessible outside of Mexico, and The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is calling for Marlboro to scrap the show on grounds that it’s illegal for the brand to sponsor the event. Marlboro’s case is that there is no explicit mention of cigarettes on the promotion flyer–that is, unless you can read Spanish where is says, "Fumar Es Causa De Cancer." Among the bands signed up so far are Vampire Weekend, Sebastian Tellier, N.E.R.D., and Girl Talk. The four shows will be in Guadalajara, Puebla, Monterrey, and Mexico City. [Pitchfork]
