Plenty of news from the worlds of Mark Kozelek and Alan Sparkhawk

Two of the senior members of indie rock’s slow-core wing are making news with and without each other. Mark Kozelek, the ex-leader of Red House Painters, will release a new album with his Sun Kil Moon project. Entitled April, the record is scheduled for an appropriate April 1 release on Kozelek’s own Caldo Verde label. April, like 2003’s Ghost of the Great Highway, features alloriginal Kozelek material, after 2005’s Tiny Cities found Sun Kil Moon reinterpreting the work of Modest Mouse. April also features vocals from another indie mainstay, Will Oldham, on two tracks, as well as plenty of the sprawling, epic, guitar-glazed tunes Kozelek has made a career out of. Kozelek will support the record with a mix of solo and Sun Kil Moon touring.

April isn’t the only release Caldo Verde has on tap for the upcoming months. On March 18, the label will release the debut, self-titled full-length from Retribution Gospel Choir. That’s the new side project from Low frontman Alan Sparhawk. Kozelek originally helped flesh the band out on its first tours, and for the album he served as the producer. Retribution Gospel Choir features Sparhawk getting grittier and louder than he usually does with Low. [Billboard]
