"Was It A Dream," a track off Marissa Nadler's recently released seventh studio album July via Sacred Bones, has Nadler sounding more haunting and ghostly than ever. The video, directed by Ryan Hamilton Walsh, nods to heavily toward silent films (Méliés' Le Voyage Dans la Lune in particular) with sepia-hued frames driving home the tone.
The sound here and elsewhere on the record is no doubt endebted to the production of Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth, Wolves in the Throne Room) and the string arrangements of Eyvind Kang (John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Mike Patton). Though, of course, most of the credit goes to the melancholy songwriting of Nadler.
