Marissa Nadler on tour w/Jesse Sykes, Dungen

So you think that female nu-folk singers (let's all agree to start phasing out the old "freak-folk" appellation, shall we?) are all about tie-dyed bandanas, day-glo face paint, and songs that sound like they were "written" while dancing barefoot in the center of an outdoor drum circle? Admittedly, there's no lack of evidence to support that theory, but you obviously haven't heard Marissa Nadler. Adjectives like "wispy," "haunting," and "ethereal" can be applied without fear to her work, as she brings sure-fire songwriting skills, precise picking chops, and a soft-but-strong singing voice to bear in her luminous balladry.

Nadler's next album is set for '09 release on Kemado, and will feature members of Blonde Redhead and Beachwood Sparks, among others, but for now you can catch her live with some equally estimable companions. If, like us, your location prevents you from witnessing the impressive double-shot of her shows with Jesse Sykes, the upside is the possibility of seeing her opening for neo-psych masters Dungen instead.
