Malkmus working on new album

After testing out new material on the road earlier this year, indie rock posterboy Stephen Malkmus is putting those fresh tunes to tape. He recently posted on his website that tracking for the new album is "67.4685% completed." Can't tell if the old trickster is being serious or joking when he ways he's working on the new album in "Northern Montana" where "the bears were just coming out of hibernation." He also adds that "Matador is pushing for an early 2008 release." For a preview of what might be on the new album, follow the links on this previous post.
In other SM news, he reports that his gig at the Pitchfork Festival this summer will be a solo one, since current Jicks drummer Janet Weiss will be playing drums on Bright Eyes' massive tour.

I caught him and the Jicks here in L.A. in January. Good show. The new stuff is really jammy and drawn out. Weiss adds some nice spunk to the band.

yeah, I heard he's totally jam-band-y these days. what gives?

What can you say, people change. The new stuff isn't bad at all. The fact that it's not early Pavement material shouldn't exactly count against it.
