She also has EIGHTEEN number one singles, she's done a lot more than Madonna has in less time. The only reason why Madonna got so popular was because she has no shame, and will take off her clothes to sell records. Her gimmick is shocking people. That's all she has. She doesn't touch the soul like Mariah does. Mariah's music has actually changed people's lives, and made them feel better about themselves. That's why she has so many fans. She also has a very diverse fan base. From children to ederly, from Black, Asian, Latin, White, and everyone else, gay, and straight--everyone! Look at her latest concert dvd, and you'll see so many different types of people there.
Madonna in the other hand, mostly has her old fan base. She doesn't really get new fans. Most of her fans are gay caucasian men over 40.

Now, I have to say that I really don't like having to write this, because I think that both Madonna, and Mariah have very different things to offer. I happen to like both-though as far as Madonna goes, I like more of her old stuff---I have her two greatest hits CDs. The thing that has given me a bad taste about Madonna has actually been her fans. All they do is bad mouth Mariah Carey. Every Madonna forum on the web has negative comments about Mariah Carey. It seems like they talk more about Mariah than Madonna, even though it's a forum about Madonna.

I'd say # 1 with about 250,000 copies sold. Madonna will probably never sell as well in the US as MC. The rest of the world still eats her up, but in the US she's been blacklisted to some degree. It's amazing she sells as much as she does.

MC is obviously the superior singer, but Madonna is by far the superior entertainer. Unfortunately MC uses her superior instrument to sing bland, boring songs with no passion or originality. Madonna's songs are simplistic, yes, but she is always more adventurous and willing to put herself out there for her "art".

In terms of image, Madonna is a provocateur, and some may say shameless, but she does it to push boundaries and express her art. Questionable, sure...but MC is simply a bimbo, nothing more and nothing less. Equally shameless, but NOT equally entertaining.

I've been reading estimates as low as 225 000. That's hard to believe given Janet Jackson's record opened at 181 000 and Madonna's career is obviously much hotter than Janet Jackson's at this point.

If Mariah sold 463 000 and Janet Jackson sold 181 000 I would say Madonna will come in around 300 000 or so. Which still seems kind of low, Madonna seems a little hotter than that these days, everyone was thrilled with her last record and it opened at 350 000, I would be shocked to see her opening number come in less than 300 000.
