Lupe Fiasco Cancels 'Friend Of The People' Mixtape Over Fear Of Leaks

While I totally understand where this Chicago MC is coming from, his reasoning is still a little wonky. Lupe Fiasco announced via MTV that he would not be releasing his Friend of the People mixtape, which was previously delayed so he could focus on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for charity. He explains in the below video that he is afraid more tracks from his upcoming Lasers record will leak. Two tracks, "Shining Down" and "I'm Beamin'," have "leaked," though I'm pretty sure at least the latter of those hit the blogosphere via an e-mail from Atlantic Records. I do understand his apprehension, though, because his debut, Food & Liquor, leaked months before its release date.

Apparently, Lupe's also fearful of over-saturating the world with freestyles and mixtapes, so much so he asked DJ Absolut to not release a mixtape he had planned. Seems a bit strange to me, but I have faith in Lupe, especially after hearing his previous mixtape, Enemy of the State. And here's hoping this doesn't lead to more delays for Lasers, which seems likely at this point.
