Lou Reed freaks out squares, Germans with live Metal Machine Music redo

Lou ReedMaybe the perfectionist in ol' Lou wanted to correct the little foibles he made on the first go-round, or maybe he just wanted to explore the acoustic possibilities of sixty-four minutes of grinding amplified feedback and excruciating industrial noise in the Berlin Opera House. Either way, Reed's 2002 live German performance of his classic comedy rock album, Metal Machine Music (featuring avant-garde chamber group Zeitkratzer), is set to be released on September 4 on Asphodel Records. Over the years, critical reception of the album (which is composed indeed of sixty-four minutes of feedback and noise) has ranged from the histrionic "punk at its essence" to the more practical "completely unlistenable." Reed himself seemed to have summed up the album when he remarked, "Anyone who gets to side four is dumber than I am." Let us now append that to read, "Anyone who listens to the live version is dumber than I am."
