This December will mark the fifth time that our planet has somehow managed to revolve around the sun without the tunes, tones and teachings of the legendary Joe Strummer. In homage to this anniversary, members of Oasis, Primal Scream and the Smiths will come together at London's JAMM on December 22 to stage "London Calling '' Remembering Joe Strummer." They will perform a treasure trunk of Clash classics under the name the Strummerville Collective, which will also feature Jamie T and members of Paul Weller's band.
Event organizer Geoff Martin explained, "We wanted to mark the fifth anniversary of Joe Strummer's death with a unique event that marks the positive impact that his life had on so many of us. Brixton JAMM will be the place to be."
And in keeping with the spirit of one of punk's most innovative and altruistic pioneers, the event isn't shaping up to be your typical venture into the exciting capitalist possibilities of a dead rock star. Getting a cut of the proceeds will be Strummerville, Joe Strummer's foundation for new music, along with RAR08 to help stop the far-right British National Party in London's May elections. Continuing even further to fight the power like Spanish bombs, Martin hopes to scrounge up enough left-over scratch to donate to Billy Bragg's Jail Guitar Doors initiative, which puts guitars (not guns) into Brixton prisons.
Also appearing to show their respect and teeth will be members of A3 and Madchester maniacs the Happy Mondays. [Gigwise]
