Track review: Mick Boogie f/ Little Brother "Never Leave" (produced by the Kickdrums)

(via The Smoking Section)
I think Phonte just dropped the funniest verse of '07 with his work on "Never Leave," taken from the upcoming Little Brother mixtape, Justus for All. He spits a Clipse-like sixteen that plays out as an ode to crack dealers everywhere, but after a revelation at the end of the verse and a second listen, it is actually an ode to the dudes working behind Krispy Kreme counters. This is followed by thoughtful musings such as, "You get that Krispy Kreme, all the doughboys go craaaazy." Truer words have never been spoken. Phonte reminds me of Biz Markee, but with more talent and more to say.
On a musical note, "Never Leave" is definitely nice, but if this is what we can expect from the post-9th Wonder Little Brother, I'm not sure why they sought other producers to begin with. The smoothed out and chopped soul sample with a whispy snare pretty much follows the 9th Wonder formula verbatim. With Phonte mingling amongst the likes of 4Hero and DJ Spinna, I'm expecting some different sounds on their next album, Getback.
