Last month we announced the Velvet Underground tribute album from Castle Face Records—commemorating the whopping 45 years since those freaks released The Velvet Underground & Nico and scared hippies from coast to coast—and now we get to listen to Thee Oh Sees’ contribution to the compilation. The San Francisco garage rockers have covered “European Son,” the bacchic freakout that closes the album. What better artists to cover “European Son” than Thee Oh Sees, who mangle their guitars in a perfect seven-and-a-half minute tribute to the Velvets.
Says frontman John Dwyer to Spin magazine: “It’s always a little threatening to take on material I consider perfect as is. The only rule being, don’t fuck it up.” They didn’t fuck it up—listen for yourself below. The Velvet Underground & Nico by Castle Face And Friends is out in many forms, from a deluxe CD package to banana-yellow vinyl, beginning October 30. [Spin]
